Workshop

'Our Great Grandmothers’ Medicine'

22nd July + 12th August | 10:30-11:30

A few generations ago, the use of plants and trees as medicine was widespread among the common people. Everyone made the most of the simple herbs around them to support their health. But how did people learn this knowledge if they couldn’t read or write, or did not have access to books?

This workshop with storyteller Claire Mace will attempt to answer that question through a mixture of stories, plant folklore and experiential exercises.

Suitable for adults and young people 7+

Show

'Sacred Herbs of Britain'

22nd July + 12th August | 13:30-14:30

Join Claire Mace for a bilingual retelling of the story of Olwen, the giant’s daughter, with hair yellower than the broom and cheeks pinker than the foxglove.

She leaves a trail of white clover wherever she walks, and is the heroine of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’, a tale from the mediaeval manuscripts of the Mabinogion.

Inspired by folklore from across Wales, this is Olwen’s territory. This show blends herb lore, folk tales and stories of the trees and plants to illuminate her landscape.

This traditional storytelling performance has been developed thanks to the Gwobr Esyllt Prize from Chwedl, the network of women storytellers in Wales.
