THE WORK: 'HOOKED + ZIG ZAG PATH'

Hooked Ella Louise I Jones 1

‘Hooked’ - This work was created using leftover fabrics from workshops and donations, supported by the Arts Council of Wales Create grant.

The project began as an exploration of upcycling and fabric reuse practices in Wales throughout history. To deepen her research, the artist visited St Fagans National Museum of History, Trefriw Woollen Mill, and The Welsh Quilting Company. She also collaborated with the charity GISDA, community hub Yr Orsaf, and Galeri Caernarfon to run textile workshops across north Wales. These workshops, engaging participants of all ages, sparked discussions on generational perspectives on upcycling.

Inspired by these experiences, she created this piece, weaving together tradition, sustainability, and community storytelling.

‘Zig Zag Path’ - This latchhook artwork is inspired by a winding path in Llanbedrog. Ella walks along this path throughout the year with her dad and dog, Max, witnessing its transformation through the seasons. The colours of trees and plants, their colours, shapes and textures constantly evolve, creating an ever-changing landscape.

This piece reflects those seasonal shifts, incorporating hues and memories from old photographs taken along the way. The artist sees the process of latch hooking as similar to nature itself - it grows, changes colour with the thread and shifts in texture depending on the materials used. Like nature, it is a gentle, time-intensive craft that gradually comes together to form something whole and beautiful.
