Ian Phillips: Mountain Light
26/03 - 07/05/17
After a degree in Illustration and career as a freelance illustrator Ian Phillips moved to mid Wales in 2001 to study the landscape and improve his printing technique. Since then he has developed a hugely successful career as an artist and printmaker with exhibitions and residencies all over the globe. A firm favourite at Glyn-y-Weddw, we are delighted to welcome Ian back with another beautiful exhibition of his original linocut relief prints.
“I have been working in Lino for over twenty five years and whenever I need inspiration for new work I either head for the coast and the crashing waves or inland for the big skies and cliffs of the high ground.
For this show, Mountain Light, I’ve chosen prints that aim to capture the weather amongst the mountains. The various ways I’ve tried to show the mist and rain changing the shapes of the hills and towering clouds and sparkling lakes adding drama to a scene.
By researching my collection and experimenting with inking, reduced colour, tone and cutting I’m trying to decide on the process for a new series I’m working on throughout 2017. Walking around the singular peak of Cadair Idris and drawing the way it alters with the seasons. This completely new series of linocuts, provisionally called The Giants Chair, is to be launched at Plas Glyn-y-Weddw in the summer of 2018.”
