I studied art and architecture at the Harris College in Preston in the 1960s before spending most of the next thirty years overseas. My love of Wales and of its land and sea was refocused and intensified on my return.
But my ability to walk the land and shore is curtailed by ever more disabling arthritis. This means I struggle to sketch or paint outside and also that I am rather limited in my studio work: I work now for shorter periods and on fewer days of the week. I am less able to work on a large scale and so concentrate on smaller paintings.
This divorce from the actuality of the subject means my work is increasingly introspective and, I believe, intense; more drawn from memory and emotion as I look to represent the land, sea, and particularly the light of Wales.
