Born in Llanystumdwy, near Criccieth, in 1931, Gwilym Prichard has become one of Wales’ most fondly admired and respected artists. His dramatic and colourful landscape paintings of North Wales and the Pembrokeshire coastline, often painted using a palette-knife, are reminiscent of his great friend, the late Sir Kyffin Williams’, work. Indeed, Gwilym has often been described, with more than a hint of truth, as ‘Kyffin with colour’. Whether he is painting Cader Idris bathed in sunlight, or Tenby harbour on a summer’s evening, these glowing paintings communicate his love of the Welsh landscape with vision and integrity.
Now a full-time resident of his native Wales, Gwilym spent many years living in Brittany, France, where he has exhibited regularly, and is also widely admired. In 1995 he was awarded the Silver Medal by the French Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters. He is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Wales. A recent huge increase in interest in his work has seen his sales soar, and he is widely regarded as the successor to Sir Kyffin Williams as Wales' most sought-after living artist.
