Artist’s Statement

I was born in Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1951 and have lived most of my life in the nearby village of Llan Ffestiniog. After leaving school I attended the Manchester School of Art.

Disillusioned, I left before completing the course to return home to work in a local slate quarry for two years before taking up painting again. For a long time I worked mainly on private commissions and book illustrations etc and decided some years ago to concentrate on exhibiting and 'doing what I like'.

My work is mostly about "Cymru" and "Y Cymry" (land and the people), and is either completed out of doors before the subject or based on my pencil or watercolour sketches.Weather,season, light (or the lack of it) place names snippets of conversation etc dicate my choice of motif.
