Artist’s Statement

Born in Bristol in 1982, she grew up in the rural parts of Somerset. Having always had a great love of art, Deanne began drawing from an early age, and over time developed her skill in painting and drawing, going on to complete a degree in Fine Art.

In 2006 she moved to Wales to live with her grandparents in order to devote more time to her work.

In December 2007, Deanne went to live on a small farm on the Mawddach estuary, helping out with the family who ran it.

Throwing herself into this new way of life, she is now concentrating on a new body of work relating to the subject of farming and the community within it.

“The first new season of calves and lambs soon dismissed any notions of farming as a romantic way of life, giving way to the harsher reality of real farming. But through watching and learning, I developed a love and fascination of the animals and the people involved.

With regards to my work, I am intrigued by the play of demanding but intensely satisfying.

I study how the muscles work beneath the skin and hair, and how this in turn shapes the outer surface.

Watching the animals, which live on the farm grow and mature, and the wide range of characters found within the farming community is a constant source of inspiration.”
