Mihangel Arfor Jones

c_320_320_14606046_0___images_stories_artists_img_7089.jpgMihangel was born of Welsh parents in 1940 and spent his early years on a mountain farm on the Cardiganshire / Montgomeryshire border. His family later moved to England where he studied for six years at Twickenham College of Art, obtaining a classical education in the Arts.

From 1961 to 1982 Mihangel worked as a freelance illustrator and painter. He gained an international reputation in the areas of book and magazine illustration, packaging, advertising and large posters for hoardings. In 1963 Mihangel set up his own company designing and producing work for modern textiles. He also became involved in education, initially working as a visiting lecturer at both St Martins College, London, and Twickenham School of Art, where he was himself educated. Later, he went on to become Head of the BA Honours course (Illustration) and Principal Lecturer at the Kent Institute of Art & Design where he remained for many years.

Following his retirement, Mihangel moved back to Wales and set about converting a C16th farmhouse into a home and studio for himself, 4 cats and several hundred canvases. From here he has continued to paint despite a long period of illness and has exhibited extensively throughout Wales, from the Kooywood Gallery in Cardiff, to the National Eisteddfod of Wales.Mihangel's work is both subjective and conceptual in nature and expressed through a variety of media. Vividly coloured pastel works of figures and fish stem from a lifelong fascination with the human form, whilst his current series of iconic paintings draw extensively on his experiences and memories of childhood. Works such as 'On baking day' and 'At the cattle market', give us an accurate and moving portrayal of Welsh farming life in the 1950's.
