A place in the Hills

Anne’s work is a personal response to the patterns and rhythms inherent in the landscape and the subtle changes of light and colour through the seasons. She has been profoundly influenced by the work of the Scottish painters William Gillies and Barbara Rae as well as the Catterline landscapes of Joan Eardley. In addition to the intense colours of Morocco, her subject matter encompasses the hills and valleys of North Wales, the Peak District, where she lives and works, and the coastline around the British Isles.
"I was inspired by the ghosts of their industrial past and the tenacity of the people who lived and worked in such a harsh environment on the very edge of the land. I am drawn to places like this. They have a gravitas and a melancholy but I see real optimism in the way they adapt and continue. Porthgain has a new life as a fishing village - the tiny boat dwarfed by the vastness of the old industrial harbour and the old cottages at Abereiddy are still there having witnessed the rise and fall of the quarry, now swallowed by the sea. It is euphemistically named the 'Blue Lagoon' but its' atmosphere is altogether much darker.”
My other favourite haunts such as Porthdinllaen, Porthmadog and Borth Y Gest are represented once again. The crisp light of November and wonderful skies provided all the inspiration. Plas Llandecwyn sits high on the hill over Llandecwyn hidden from view unless you know it is there. From here you can see
“I’m inspired by the spiritual feel of old places where people have lived and worked hard for hundreds of years especially those on the edge of the sea - hence my love for harbours.”
Her paintings start with the monoprint process where ink is applied to a perspex plate using rollers. This enables transparent layers of colour to be built up and texture is added by working back into the ink using stencils, brushes and rags. The image is then transferred onto paper by use of an etching press.
When the inks have dried, Anne works into the monoprint with chalk, oil pastel and paint to achieve the final mixed media painting.
